As May arrives, the pace of ministry often changes—but it does not diminish. For some, the intensity of spring mission conferences gives way to long miles on deputation or meaningful reconnections during furlough. Others are deep into language study, preparing for summer events and outreaches, or faithfully laboring through a full ministry schedule in the southern hemisphere.
Though the seasons and rhythms may feel different, the responsibility remains the same. Scripture reminds us, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom” Psalm 90:12. Whether your calendar feels full or flexible, structured or uncertain, each day is still a stewardship entrusted by God. May is not a pause in purpose—it is an opportunity to be intentional, to invest wisely, and to remember that even the quieter or transitional moments of ministry carry eternal significance.
Use the Gaps Wisely
Empty spaces on the calendar—whether on deputation, furlough, or the field—are not wasted time. May often brings a slower pace for some and a busier for others, but it also brings opportunities if we use the time wisely. Use these moments to follow up with pastors, reach out to contacts, take care of important administrative work you’ve been putting off, or spend some needed quality family time.
A phone call, visit, or updated ministry report can go further now than during busier seasons. Faithful stewardship in the “in-between” days often opens doors for what’s ahead.
Strengthen What Gets Neglected
When the pace slows, it’s easy to relax spiritually—but this is actually the time to grow stronger. Use quieter days to invest in your walk with the Lord and in your family. Unhurried devotions, Scripture memory, date nights, vacations, and intentional prayer time can reset the tone of your ministry.
This is also a valuable time to study, read, and sharpen areas that often get overlooked. A strengthened private walk with the Lord will always support a more fruitful outward ministry.
Prepare for What’s Next
May is a planting season for most of the world. While others slow down, this is the time to look ahead—schedule meetings, plan outreaches, and prepare for the coming busy months. The work you do now will shape your fall and beyond. The Bible says in Psalms 90:12, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom”. A full and fruitful season is often the result of wisely using the days that seem the least urgent.

How To Stay In The Ministry Your Whole Life by Don Sisk
“Dr. Don Sisk outlines that long-term ministry requires viewing it as a marathon, not a sprint, while maintaining a humble, joyous, and biblical focus. He highlights crucial principles such as overcoming the “messiah complex,” nurturing a sense of humor, and consistently relying on God’s strength.”
A Note for the Ladies:
Whether you are finally catching your breath after a heavy spring travel schedule or you are preparing for a busy time of ministry on the field, May is the perfect time to refocus. It is so easy to let a never-ending “to-do” list become the master, but remember that your greatest work for the Lord flows from a heart that is rested in Him. Redeeming the time as the schedule begins to lighten for some may look like an afternoon walk, an unhurried cup of coffee with your husband, quality family nights, or finally finishing that book.
As the pace shifts over the next few months, don’t let the change distract you from the Savior. Use this window to shore up your spirit and stay steadfast in the simple things, like catching up on meaningful calls, organizing your home, or enjoying a slower pace of school with the kids before the fall. Whether you are folding a mountain of laundry or navigating a new detour in your ministry, do it all for the Master. Your “Well Done” is coming from the Lord who sees every mile, sacrifice, and each and every minute we labor in harvest.
